Church of Santa Maria in Trastevere
Traditionally, this church is considered the first to have been
opened for worship in Rome and in any case the first to be dedicated
to the Virgin Mary. In this spot in 38 BC a fountain of oil flowed
for a whole day. An event later construed as a miraculous annunciation
of the birth of Christ.
This church was founded around 221 A.D. by Saint Calixtus and it
was completely rebuilt at the dawn of the second millennium and
again restructured in the 18th century.
