Church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli
This church was built in 6th century and rises from the highest
point of the Capitoline Hill, where there was the Arx (the Citadel
of Rome to defend the northern flank of the Palatine). During the
Republic a temple was built here to Juno Moneta. The name comes
from an altar (ara) dedicated to the goddess of the sky or from
the Citadel (Arx).
The Holy Child Chapel
The chapel took its name from a statuette which, according to legend,
had miraculous curative power. Unfortunately it was stolen in 1993
and has never been recovered.
