Porta Pia

The outside façade of the gate is the work of Vespignani in 19th century. This gate is very important for the history of Italy. On 20 September 1870 Italian troops entered Rome through a breach in the Aurelian Wall. Rome captured by the italian army, ending the temporal authoring of the Pope. Pio IX retires to the Vatican.
